Sen. Edward Kennedy is involved in a fatal traffic accident on Martha’s Vineyard.

[19] Mary Jo Kopechne, 28, a former Kennedy aide, dies when a car driven by Kennedy goes off the Dike Road Bridge on Chappaquiddick Island. Kennedy is subsequently found guilty of leaving the scene of the accident, which he does not report until many hours later.
